My car is making a squeeling noise You may have experienced this before. You start your car one morning and there's a loud squealing noise coming from under the bonnet which gets louder when you rev up the engine. Then after a few revs of the throttle it stops - until the next time and progressively gets worse? Well don't worry too much as this is a very common problem and is not likely to be serious. The most likely cause is the fan belt slipping. This belt is fitted around the crank shaft (external of the engine) and also around other components such as the alternator providing drive to make those components function. The fan belt is fitted under tension and over time stretches which causes it to become loose. The action of the belt slipping over the drive wheel's of the components it's connected to causes the squealing sound. It can be easily remedied by adding more tension to the belt via the tensioning mechanism however this is temporary and will soon need replacing. On most mass produced cars it's a 30 minute job for a mechanic and shouldn't cost too much.
